Special issue of Advances in Bamboo Science

Future uses of bamboo

Bamboo is a key material that is increasingly being viewed as a part of nature-based solutions to serious issues such as climate change. To maximize its potential as a carbon sink, and to take full advantage of its amazing properties, we need to utilize bamboo to far greater extent than is currently happening. A rapidly developing area is the use of engineered bamboo in structures, and this is likely to be an important way in which bamboo can contribute to carbon sequestration. However, there are also many other uses, including new chemical and electrical bamboo-based biomaterials, ‘bambootronics’, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, foods and food additives, fabrics, and biocomposites. This special issue examines many of these future uses, looking at the challenges involved in their adoption, research priorities and future opportunities, and how the role of bamboo in nature-based solutions to environmental issues could be promoted.
Advances in Bamboo Science is a new, peer-reviewed, Open Access journal published by Elsevier. Any papers submitted before 1 March 2023 will be published free of charge.
